I just finished watching 2023's independent film Apocalypse Clown.
I have absolutely no idea what I just watched.
Without giving out too many spoilers, 3 clowns attempt to navigate Ireland's post-apocalyptic wasteland, 48 hours out from a really big solar flare.
Natalie Palamides stole every scene she was in as the unhinged Funzo the Clown. I would specifically look for her in future projects. I would also look for future projects by the comedy troupe Dead Cat Bounce, which wrote the movie.
Why did I write a short article that basically said nothing? Because Apocalypse Clown was kind of an anomaly.
It had a few magically zany moments, but how movies these days are zany?
Don't get me wrong, for every hit in this movie, there was a miss (or two), but most comedies today are either lighthearted or parodies.
In an age low budget, suspenseful horror, why don't filmmakers shoot for low budget comedy? Apocalypse Clown was dark and over-the-top, but not in a cheesy Sharknado way.
If you google the best comedies of the new millennium, there's a lot of formulaic tripe on that list.
